Flashmob the Opera repeat on BBC 2

Flashmob, th Opera is repeated on BBC Two on Boxing Day, 26th December 2004 from 4:45pm - 5:45pm.

From the Radio Times:

This bizarre experiment looked like being a one-off curiosity when it was first broadcast live in October on BBC3, but it worked well. The idea was to stage an opera at London's Paddington station in the midst of commuters. Accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, soloists performed around the concourse, to the bemusement (and delight) of the public. The story involves a romance between a football fan (tenor) and a City high-flier (soprano). After a lovers' tiff, she has called off the wedding and is heading off on a train when she bumps into a charming stranger (baritone). The show is full of striking moments, some planned, others thrown up by unwitting extras. It all feels very fresh and real, and may spawn more quirky shows like this. It could be just the shot in the arm the BBC's arts output needs.

60 December 27, 2004 12:16 AM Carol

Absolutely fantastic! DEFINITELY the best T.V. all Christmas - an' I thought I hated opera. But, like many others, I only stumbled across this gem while channel-hopping. Did I miss all the trailers? Or do the B.B.C. bosses genuinely not recognise what makes good T.V.?

61 December 27, 2004 01:23 AM Muzahim

Great. Brilliant. I've enjoyed many operas at Covent Garden but this one was breathtaking. The modern libretto and settings were inspirational and gave new and fresh life to much loved works.
Please repeat and release a DVD as I missed some of it.

62 December 27, 2004 08:01 AM Mr Stephen Paul Garrett

72 December 29, 2004 04:14 PM Hemant Murthy

I saw this while relaxing in a hotel in Aberystwyth. What good fortune the hotel TV did not have many channels to watch, or else I would have missed it. It was really good. The concept was great. And the delivery of all actors was really great. Loved the football fans part - esp. the way they say "...We blokes need to stick together...". Angel was also great.

73 December 30, 2004 12:16 AM George

Wonderful! I laughed, I cried! Come Scoglio, What a Plonker! Cool voice of God in the Factotum. And a great Nessum Dorma. This was the best TV all Christmas. Thank you so much! Thank God I taped it. I have seen it four times.
George

74 December 30, 2004 12:27 AM George

George again. So good to have Barrie Davies there. In the Factotum, shirt Number three! So very clever!
I have to watch again! It'll be a late night. Have you a clue how much good-hearted laughter this has created? Utterly glorious!
George

79 January 7, 2005 04:24 PM Paul

Well done and congratulations to the BBC and to all of those who were involved in creating this programme. I loved it asdid my girlfriend. We were grinning from ear to ear (with delight) during the whole show, and laughing/enjoying at the great humour it displayed.

Congratulations on being brave (to take a risk on something so different), innovative, creative, raising the tone of TV and introducing so many (such as myself) to the delights of Opera. It really was awsome!

Thanks and hope you will do another one.

80 March 31, 2005 11:49 AM Brian Kearns

Flashmob the Opera.

An outstanding piece of television.

An example of how, on some very rare occasions (even more rare these days), the BBC is still capable of being involved in programme making which is truely innovative, original, entertaining and educational.

The programme was rough around the edges: in some places it appeared that the programme makers didn’t know what was going to happen next and the advanced publicity did not generate sufficient momentum to ensure a large turn-out of supporters . However, the apparent confusion and the fact that many of the onlookers who participated appeared to have done so on the spur of the moment only added to the sense of spontaneity.

The finale was an emotional moment, and the fact that a number of the onlookers joined in the singing despite the confusion was a testament to the sense of occasion which was generated by the event.

A great success!
